When you think of coaching, you might imagine a professional coach having a one-on-one conversation with a client. But in reality, most managers aren't professional coaches and there isn't space or time for regular in-depth coaching conversations.

A coaching framework often used by professional coaches is the 'GROW' model: helping coachees explore Goals, Reality, Obstacles/Opportunities, and the Way forward with them. You can use this model to structure in-depth coaching conversations, but also to transform daily business activities into coaching opportunities. If you take daily tasks and events as a starting point for reflecting on how the coachee goes about defining goals, how they view and interpret their reality, what obstacles and opportunities they see, and how they design and commit to action planning, then coaching ceases to be something that is "on top of work," but an essential part of the way work gets done.
